Job description

Target start date: Immediately. Relocation provided.

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

As a Test Engineer, Robotics in our Humanoid manufacturing team, you’ll play a pivotal role in validating the mechanical, electrical, and software systems that power our next-generation humanoid robots. From individual sensors and actuators to fully integrated bipedal platforms, you’ll be responsible for ensuring our systems are safe, reliable, and performant through rigorous testing at every level of integration.

This is a hands-on, interdisciplinary role combining mechanical test design, embedded software bring-up, test automation, and cross-functional debugging. You’ll collaborate closely with hardware, software, and manufacturing teams to accelerate development timelines, increase product reliability, and enable rapid scaling in both R&D and production environments. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive on first-principles thinking, embrace technical ambiguity, and want to build the testing backbone for some of the most complex machines ever developed. Join us in redefining the future of human-assistive robotics—one test at a time.

Responsibilities

  • Full-Stack Testing and Validation

    • Design and execute functional, environmental, and performance tests for critical subsystems—locomotion, perception, manipulation, power, thermal, and more.

    • Lead test planning, procedure creation, execution, and reporting for both subsystem-level and system-level robotic assemblies.

  • Automation & Test Infrastructure

    • Develop and maintain automated test frameworks, including software-in-the-loop (SIL), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and end-of-line (EOL) tests.

    • Build infrastructure to monitor robot behavior, collect and analyze logs, and track regressions and KPIs over time.

  • Software Bring-up & Embedded Integration

    • Support initial integration of sensors, actuators, and embedded systems on robot platforms.

    • Validate firmware, middleware, and real-time control software on production and prototype hardware.

    • Collaborate with software teams to test ROS/ROS2 modules, perception pipelines, and motion planning algorithms in real-time environments.

  • Custom Test System Design

    • Architect mechanical and electrical test fixtures using commercial and custom components.

    • Design fluid, electrical, or mechanical systems as needed to simulate realistic robot loading scenarios.

    • Interface test systems with DAQs, oscilloscopes, signal generators, cameras, and industrial sensors.

  • Cross-functional Debugging & Continuous Improvement

    • Identify and root-cause failures using test data, logs, instrumentation, and schematics.

    • Work with design, integration, and manufacturing teams to resolve system-level issues and drive continuous improvement.

    • Define best practices for test coverage, traceability, and reliability at each stage of development.

  • Documentation & Process Control

    • Write detailed test plans, checklists, procedures, and pass/fail criteria.

    • Contribute to standardization of processes for rapid validation, manufacturing scale-up, and product certification.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field

  • 2+ years of experience in one or more of the following:

    • Electromechanical test systems

    • Embedded systems/software integration

    • Robotics validation or manufacturing testing

  • Proficiency in Python and C++ for automation and integration tasks

  • Experience working with Linux-based systems and command-line tools

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with ROS/ROS2, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, or other embedded communication protocols

  • Familiarity with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, signal generators, and power analyzers

  • Strong debugging skills across hardware/software boundaries

  • Experience with HIL frameworks, SIL testing, and real-time system validation

  • Experience designing mechanical or electromechanical test fixtures

  • Hands-on experience with FEA, GD&T, and CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, or similar)

  • Knowledge of battery systems, thermal validation, or EMI/EMC testing

  • Exposure to CI/CD systems and version control (e.g., Git, Jenkins)

  • Background in fast-paced prototyping or manufacturing environments

  • Experience with manufacturing end-of-line test systems

Nice to have

  • Prior work with humanoid or legged robotic systems

  • Experience with perception, sensor fusion, or whole-body control algorithms

  • Background in safety-critical systems or regulatory compliance testing

Compensation
