Staff Electrical Engineer – Robot Hands Team

  • On-site
    • Palo Alto, California, United States
  • Hardware Engineering

No company, no research institute has ever managed to build a robot hand that comes anywhere close to human level dexterity. We invite you to be part of making this breakthrough happen.

Job description

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.

About Us

As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer to join our Hands Team. This is a role for a highly skilled, hands-on engineer who thrives on rapid prototyping, high-performance board design, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in robotic dexterity. You will play a key role in designing, testing, and refining electrical systems for the most intricate and high-performance robotic hands ever built.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the design, development, and optimization of electrical systems for robotic hands, including custom PCBAs, power management, sensing, and control architectures.

  • Rapidly iterate and prototype board designs, delivering lightning-fast turnaround times from concept to working prototypes.

  • Transition designs from early-stage proof-of-concept to production-quality boards, balancing performance, manufacturability, and cost.

  • Develop robust electrical solutions that meet strict size, weight, power, and reliability constraints.

  • Ensure seamless integration of electronic systems with mechanical and software components, optimizing signal integrity and minimizing interference.

  • Drive cost-efficient, scalable designs without compromising performance, supporting the transition from low-volume prototyping to full-scale production.

  • Work closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure electrical designs meet real-world production constraints and sourcing limitations.

Job requirements

    • Extensive experience in schematics and layout, from rapid prototyping to production-grade systems, ideally in robotics, consumer electronics, or similar fields, with a deep understanding of high-speed, mixed-signal, and power circuits.

    • Hands-on experience with bring-up, debugging, and validation of electrical designs, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and firmware debugging tools.

    • You track down bugs fast and are resourceful in coming up with solutions

    • Knowledge of power electronics, motor control, and high-efficiency embedded systems.

    • Proven ability to optimize for reliability, cost, and manufacturability, ensuring designs meet real-world production constraints.

    • Comfort working in fast-paced environments, with a track record of delivering functional prototypes on extremely tight timelines.

    • Collaborative mindset, with experience working across mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams to bring complex electromechanical systems to life.

    Nice-to-Haves

    • Experience designing compact, high-density PCBs with flexible circuits and miniaturized components.

    • Familiarity with low-power embedded computing, FPGAs, or ASIC-based architectures for high-performance control.

    • Knowledge of sensor integration, including force/torque sensors, haptic feedback systems, and high-precision encoders.

    • Experience with low-latency, real-time control systems for robotics applications.

Location Policy

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.
