R&D engineer - Humanoid Core Technologies
- On-site
- Palo Alto, California, United States

Job description
We are the NEXT team at 1X and we build the foundations for the humanoid of the future.
To date, no robotic legs walk with the elegance of human gait. No robotic hand matches the dexterity of a human hand. No sensor suite grants a humanoid the awareness of its environment that humans naturally possess.
We are researching and developing the fundamental technologies to enable humanoids to reach human-level performance.
Job requirements
Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals (e.g., mathematics, materials science, mechanical/electrical principles).
Experience in the design and development of actuation systems including motors, drivetrains, robotic joints, and structural elements.
Educational background in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
Full-stack R&D capabilities, including:
Interpreting academic research and patents.
Modeling systems using simulation or software tools.
Prototyping with machining, rapid fabrication, and embedded systems.
Designing and running experiments with structured analysis of results.
Ability to evaluate the practicality and feasibility of novel ideas, especially when distinguishing between promising innovation and theoretical concepts.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Haves):
Demonstrated passion for building, tinkering, or technical exploration—professionally or personally.
Portfolio of projects you personally designed and/or built. (Please feel free to include links to simple personal projects or technical portfolios. Confidential or proprietary work is not required or expected).
Experience in building systems from scratch—beyond incremental improvements.
Interest in human biomechanics or the nervous system and how they relate to robotic design.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to present bold concepts and incorporate feedback effectively.
Appreciation for historic figures in science, engineering, or invention
Ph.D. in a relevant technical field.
