Staff Design for Reliability Engineer - Battery and Electronics
Job description
About 1X
We’re an AI and robotics company based in Palo Alto, California, on a mission to build a truly abundant society through general-purpose robots capable of performing any kind of work autonomously.
We believe that to truly understand the world and grow in intelligence, humanoid robots must live and learn alongside us. That’s why we’re focused on developing friendly home robots designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.
We’re looking for curious, driven, and passionate people who want to help shape the future of robotics and AI. If this mission excites you, we’d be thrilled to hear from you and explore how you might contribute to our journey.
Materials and Battery Compliance Engineer
We are seeking a highly skilled Design for Reliability (DfR) Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and robustness of mechatronic systems, electric motors, and structural components across the full product lifecycle. You will drive reliability engineering practices including DFMEA, physics-of-failure analysis, accelerated test planning, and risk modeling. Cross-functional collaboration is essential, as you will work closely with design, validation, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams to ensure our humanoid robots meet world‑class reliability standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) activities for complex mechatronic assemblies.
Apply physics-of-failure principles to identify and mitigate fundamental reliability risks.
Develop accelerated test plans, including stress modeling, damage modeling, and life prediction.
Use reliability statistics to analyze data and derive actionable insights.
Partner with design engineering to propose reliability-driven design improvements.
Work cross-functionally to assess risks, define mitigation plans, and validate design robustness.
Review and guide the reliability strategy across motors, actuators, structural parts, and electronics.
Conduct root cause analysis on failures and drive closure of corrective actions.
Summarize findings and reliability models into clear, actionable reports.
Job requirements
Strong expertise in DFMEA methodology.
Deep understanding of physics-of-failure mechanisms across Li-Ion batteries and Electronics domains
Experience designing and interpreting accelerated life tests.
Proficiency with reliability statistics and risk assessment tools.
Demonstrated problem‑solving skills and strong analytical mindset.
Experience working with Li-Ion batteries, printed circuit boards, ECU, GPU, cameras, and sensors.
