Software Engineer, Teleoperation

  • On-site
    • Palo Alto, California, United States
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Job description

Target start date: Immediately. Relocation provided.

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids. At 1X, you’ll own critical projects, tackle unsolved research problems, deliver great products to customers, and be rewarded based on merit and achievement.

We are looking for a software engineer in teleoperation to build a system that enables people to accomplish any human task using a combination of controls, design, and AI. In this role, you will take a hands-on approach to implementing immersive teleoperation technologies, collaborating with controls and autonomy engineers to scale up NEO’s capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement immersive teleoperation systems, including real-time control, audio-visual integration, and user interfaces.

  • Write and maintain high-quality, production-level code across various components of the teleoperation stack, ensuring reliability and performance.

  • Build advanced VR/AR-based solutions with focus on real-time immersion techniques such as vision reprojection, depth sensing, and control feedback systems.

  • Develop and optimize networking protocols and DSP systems for low-latency audio-visual streaming and teleoperation controls.

  • Collaborate closely with robot operators to gather feedback and continuously improve the teleoperation experience based on real-world use.

  • Debug, test, and validate systems under diverse real-world conditions, ensuring reliability, scalability, and user satisfaction.

  • Stay deeply involved in day-to-day development tasks while leading by example and mentoring team members to deliver technical excellence.

  • Work cross-functionally with AI, robotics, and product teams to integrate teleoperation solutions seamlessly with the broader system.

Job requirements

  • Getting general-purpose robots to work in the home is just about the hardest problem one can work on. The teleoperation interface we are building has never been done before. We are looking for people who are inspired by the thrill of an unsolved technical problem and are willing to dive into it with an intense work ethic.

  • Experience in teleoperation, robotics, VR/AR, or related fields, with a strong track record of delivering production-grade systems.

  • Proficiency in C++ and Python, with experience shipping high-quality, real-time, scalable software.

  • Practical experience building immersive solutions, including depth sensing, haptic feedback, and human-computer interaction.

  • Strong understanding of real-time controls, rigid body dynamics, and kinematics.

  • Experience with low-latency networking protocols, audio-visual streaming, and digital signal processing for real-time applications.

  • Skilled in troubleshooting complex systems and validating solutions in real-world environments.

  • Effective at working with diverse teams, gathering feedback, and turning ideas into tangible outcomes.

  • Enthusiasm for hands-on development, crafting solutions that directly impact how robots are operated and controlled.

Location Policy

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.

Compensation

At 1X your work and results will be rewarded with a total rewards package consisting of a base salary, stock options and benefits. Base salary range is $130,000 to $250,000. Your actual salary will be based on your knowledge, skills and experience.
