    Job description

Role: Shift Manager, Robot Operations (M3)

Location: Palo Alto & San Carlos CA (Onsite)

Shifts: Panama schedule (12-hour shifts; day or night)

    About 1X

1X builds humanoid robots that work alongside people to solve labor shortages and create abundance. As we scale from R&D into continuous operations, we are building a 24/7 data-collection and robot-operations organization.

    The Role

As a Shift Manager at 1X, you are the senior operational owner for an entire shift. You are responsible for end-to-end execution across multiple teams, including Robot Operators, Shift Supervisors, and Wrangler functions, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality operations throughout your shift. This is not a people-management-only role. You are accountable for throughput, uptime, quality signals, and operational stability during your shift, and for clean handoffs between shifts.

    You Will

    • Own end-to-end operational performance for your assigned shift (day or night)

    • Lead and coordinate multiple Shift Supervisors across robot operations and wrangling

    •  Ensure robots, operators, and environments are staffed and ready for continuous operation

    • Act as the final escalation point for operational issues during your shift

    • Monitor key metrics including:

      • Robot uptime and availability

      • Operator productivity and adherence to protocols

      • Data collection throughput and quality signals

    • Drive clear shift handoffs with documented status, issues, and priorities

    • Partner with Data QA, Logistics/Wrangling, and Engineering escalation paths as needed

    • Enforce safety, operational standards, and incident response procedures

    • Identify recurring issues and drive corrective actions across shifts

    • Support onboarding and ramp-up of supervisors as the organization scales

    • Provide structured feedback and improvement recommendations to Operations Leadership

    Must Have

    • 5+ years experience in operations leadership, production, logistics, or industrial environments

    • Prior responsibility for shift-based or 24/7 operations

    • Experience managing supervisors or team leads

    • Strong operational judgment and ability to make real-time decisions under pressure

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • High standards for safety, quality, and accountability

    • Comfort working nights, weekends, and rotating Panama schedules

    Nice to Have

    • Experience in robotics, manufacturing, warehouse, or mission-critical operations

    • Familiarity with operational metrics, dashboards, and incident management

    • Experience scaling teams in fast-growth environments

    Compensation & Benefits

    • Salary: $120,000 – $150,000 + Equity

    • Health, dental, and vision insurance

    • 401(k) with company match

    • Paid time off and holidays
