Prototyping Technician – 3D Printing

  • On-site
    • Palo Alto, California, United States
  • Hardware Engineering

Job description

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations. This role is based in Palo Alto.

Why this job is exciting

  • Operate and improve a fleet of 3D printers that power rapid prototyping across the company

  • Design fixtures, tune processes, and automate workflows to make iteration faster and more reliable

  • Grow your hands-on skills while directly contributing to the development of humanoid robots

Responsibilities

  • Run FDM, SLA, and SLS 3D printers: queue jobs, adjust settings, troubleshoot, and post-process parts

  • Maintain and improve print systems, ensuring consistent machine performance and workflow efficiency

  • Collaborate with engineers to optimize CAD models for printability and part quality

  • Design and build tools, jigs, and test fixtures to support prototyping and validation

  • Assemble and test prototypes, contributing to functional builds of mechanical systems

  • Document print settings, test results, and process improvements

  • Manage lab organization, supplies, and part flow

  • Identify opportunities for automation in the 3D printing workflow and implement improvements

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience operating a range of 3D printers (FDM, SLA, and more)

  • Proficiency with slicing software such as PrusaSlicer, Cura, or PreForm

  • Experience with CAD tools such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape

  • Strong mechanical assembly and troubleshooting skills

Job requirements

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with multiple print methods (FDM, SLA, SLS, DLP)

  • Familiarity with post-processing techniques such as washing, curing, sanding, or tapping

  • Background in robotics or mechatronics and building functional systems

  • Experience designing and iterating on fixtures or test rigs

How you work

  • Take ownership: You focus on outcomes, not just tasks, and hold yourself accountable for quality

  • Move quickly: You make decisions and iterate without waiting for perfect conditions

  • Learn and be curious: You explore unfamiliar tools and actively seek improvement

  • Earn trust: You communicate clearly, respect others, and deliver reliably

  • Stay resourceful: You thrive in ambiguity and keep projects moving forward

Location Policy
