Job description
Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.
We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.
We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.
As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are looking for a Prototyping Specialist to join our R&D team and provide Prototype as a Service for the entire R&D organization. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, fabricate, and test mechanical prototypes, helping accelerate product development and innovation. You will leverage your expertise in rapid mechanical prototyping to build functional parts and assemblies that integrate into our robotic systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the go-to resource for mechanical prototyping within the R&D team, providing Prototype as a Service to accelerate development cycles, specially for our robotic hand.
Design, fabricate, and assemble custom mechanical prototypes, including structural components, enclosures, joints, and mechanisms for robotic systems.
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to ensure smooth integration of prototypes into the overall system design.
Manage and maintain the prototyping lab, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are available for efficient prototyping.
Utilize 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and other fabrication methods to produce high-quality prototype parts.
Perform hands-on assembly and testing of prototypes to validate fit, function, and performance under real-world conditions.
Document prototyping processes by creating drawings, assembly guides, and test reports to support future development and scalability.
Work with suppliers to source materials and coordinate the fabrication of custom prototype parts.
Job requirements
5+ years of experience in mechanical prototyping, including CAD design and hands-on fabrication.
Experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Onshape for creating 3D models and engineering drawings.
Strong hands-on experience with 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, manual machining tools, and hand tools.
Familiarity with mechanical testing methods, including fitment, durability, and performance testing.
Experience with rapid prototyping materials such as plastics, metals, and composite materials.
Excellent problem-solving skills and a creative, hands-on approach to hardware development.
Experience creating detailed documentation, including assembly guides and test procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with robotic systems and mechatronic assemblies.
Knowledge of low-volume manufacturing techniques such as vacuum casting, sheet metal fabrication, or CNC machining.
Experience in designing custom test rigs for mechanical component validation.
Understanding of data acquisition systems and test automation tools.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every single qualification.
