The Patent Engineer will play a key role in capturing, drafting, and managing the company’s intellectual property, particularly patents. This position requires a technical background combined with the ability to articulate complex innovations into robust patent applications. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with engineers, inventors, and legal teams to identify, document, and protect the company’s intellectual assets while navigating patent laws and regulations effectively.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Draft and file high-quality patent applications that accurately and comprehensively protect the company’s inventions.
Collaborate with engineers and inventors to identify patentable technologies, ensuring technical aspects are well-documented.
Lead the technical write-ups and develop an IP strategy with counsel on new
developments.Conduct detailed prior art searches and patentability assessments to evaluate the uniqueness and strength of new inventions.
Support the prosecution of patent applications by responding to office actions and providing technical expertise during examination.
Manage the company’s patent portfolio, ensuring timely filings, renewals, and compliance with applicable patent laws and regulations.
Provide technical support for intellectual property litigation, licensing, and other IP-related matters as required.
Monitor competitor activity and analyze third-party patents for potential risks or opportunities.
Develop and maintain best practices for capturing and documenting inventions within the organization.
Work with external patent counsel as needed to support patent prosecution and other legal processes.
Stay current on patent laws, trends, and best practices to ensure the company’s IP strategies remain competitive.
Job requirements
Strong technical expertise, preferably in robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software, and AI
Proven experience in drafting and prosecuting patents, either in-house or at a law firm.
Familiarity with patent laws and regulations, including filing and prosecution processes in the U.S. and internationally.
Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively.
Proficiency in conducting prior art searches and preparing patentability analyses.
Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with engineers, inventors, and legal professionals.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
Registration as a U.S. Patent Agent or Patent Attorney is highly desirable.

We are in the heart of the Silicon Valley in a commuter-friendly location with plenty of parking, access to 101 or 280. If you prefer public transportation, Orange Line (VTA) light rail station is across the street. Living in the Bay Area, you will have access to many activities available in its proximity from surfing in Half Moon Bay to skiing at Tahoe, wine tasting in Napa, hiking on the many trails or other sports activities on the many tennis courts, golf courses, etc.
