Mechanical Engineer - Actuators

No company, no research institute has ever managed to build a robot hand that comes anywhere close to human level dexterity. We invite you to be part of making this breakthrough happen.

    Job description

    About 1X
We’re an AI and robotics company based in Palo Alto, California, on a mission to build a truly abundant society through general-purpose robots capable of performing any kind of work autonomously.

We believe that to truly understand the world and grow in intelligence, humanoid robots must live and learn alongside us. That’s why we’re focused on developing friendly home robots designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.

We’re looking for curious, driven, and passionate people who want to help shape the future of robotics and AI. If this mission excites you, we’d be thrilled to hear from you and explore how you might contribute to our journey.

    Role Overview

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, integration, and iteration of robotic actuators. In this role, you will work closely with electrical, control, and test engineers to develop robust mechanical designs that can be prototyped, tested, and eventually manufactured.

You will contribute to both concept development and viability decisions and day-to-day execution, including CAD design, detailed drawings, tolerance definition, and support of assembly and testing. This role also interfaces closely with electric motors and electromagnetic components, and curiosity about electromagnetic effects on mechanical design is strongly encouraged.

    Responsibilities

    • Design and integrate mechanical components and assemblies for robotic actuators

    • Create and maintain CAD models, drawings, and BOMs

    • Define tolerances, fits, and interfaces for actuator components

    • Support prototyping, assembly, and iteration of actuator hardware

    • Work closely with electrical engineers on packaging, clearances, and integration constraints

    • Consider electromagnetic interfaces (air gaps, magnets, laminations, sensors) in mechanical designs

    • Support testing by updating designs based on test feedback and failures

    • Help maintain mechanical documentation and revision control

    • Contribute to DFM/DFA considerations as designs mature

    Job requirements

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

    • 2–5 years of experience in mechanical design or related roles

    • Strong CAD skills and experience producing manufacturing drawings (Solidworks, Onshape, Inventor, …)

    • Understanding of mechanical fundamentals such as tolerances, fits, and materials

    • Curiosity about electric motors and electromagnetic effects in electromechanical systems

    • Hands-on mindset and willingness to support builds and testing

    • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering team

    Nice to Have

    • Experience with electromechanical systems or actuators

    • Basic familiarity with electric motors or electromagnetic components

    • Exposure to rapid prototyping and iterative design cycles

    • Familiarity with bearings, gears, shafts, and structural components

    • Experience supporting hardware through testing and iteration

    Benefits & Compensation

    • Salary Range: $107,700 - $161,500 + Equity

    • Health, dental, and vision insurance

    • 401(k) with company match

    • Paid time off and holidays
