Job description

Target start date: immediately.  Relocation provided.

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.

As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are looking for a Head of Teleoperation Systems to lead the development of cutting-edge teleoperation technologies for our humanoid robots.

In this role, you will lead a cross-disciplinary team to design and deliver immersive, high-performance teleoperation systems. Combining expertise across hardware, software, controls, and immersive technologies, you will create solutions that enable seamless human oversight and interaction with our robots. Your leadership will drive innovation, ensuring our teleoperation capabilities are robust, scalable, and a cornerstone of our product strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for teleoperation systems, ensuring alignment with overall product and company goals.

  • Lead a full-stack team across disciplines including controls, network systems, digital signal processing (DSP), electrical engineering, software development, and VR/AR technologies.

  • Drive the design and implementation of immersive teleoperation systems that enable intuitive and reliable remote interaction with humanoid robots in real-world environments.

  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration of teleoperation capabilities with the robot’s core systems.

  • Lead efforts to optimize network performance, latency, and reliability for teleoperation under varying real-world conditions.

  • Advance system reliability and robustness through the application of cutting-edge control algorithms, fault tolerance techniques, and safety systems.

  • Establish and manage partnerships with vendors and technology providers to accelerate innovation in teleoperation tools and systems.

  • Mentor and grow a high-performing, cross-functional team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

  • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of teleoperation systems, iterating on designs to meet and exceed user and company expectations.

  • Represent teleoperation systems in cross-functional leadership discussions, providing technical insight and strategic recommendations.

Job requirements

  • Proven track record of setting and delivering a bold technical vision in teleoperation, robotics, or a similar field.

  • Deep technical knowledge across controls, networking, DSP, electrical systems, software, and immersive technologies like VR/AR.

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex, high-impact systems at scale.

  • Strong understanding of the challenges of deploying teleoperation systems in real-world environments, including latency, reliability, and user experience considerations.

  • Ability to align technical development with product and business goals, delivering solutions that meet both immediate and long-term needs.

  • Skilled at working with engineering, product, and business teams to drive alignment and execution.

  • Demonstrated ability to tackle complex technical challenges, combining analytical rigor with creative thinking.

  • Deep understanding of end-user needs, with a commitment to delivering exceptional user experiences.
