FEA Electromagnetics Simulation Engineer

    Job description

    About 1X

We’re an AI and robotics company based in Palo Alto, California, on a mission to build a truly abundant society through general‑purpose robots capable of performing any kind of work autonomously.

We believe that to truly understand the world and grow in intelligence, humanoid robots must live and learn alongside us. That’s why we’re focused on developing friendly home robots designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.

We’re looking for curious, driven, and passionate people who want to help shape the future of robotics and AI. If this mission excites you, we’d be thrilled to hear from you and explore how you might contribute to our journey.

    Role Overview

We are looking for an FEA Electromagnetics Simulation Engineer to drive the electromagnetic design and optimization of electric motors for robotic actuators. In this role, you will use simulation and analytical tools to explore motor topologies, optimize performance, and guide design decisions before and during prototyping.

You will work closely with electrical, mechanical, controls, and test engineers to ensure simulation results translate into real-world performance. This role is central to accelerating development cycles and pushing actuator performance to the next level.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform electromagnetic simulations of electric motors using FEA tools

    • Design and optimize motor topologies for torque density, efficiency, losses, torque ripple, and other targets directly related to robot performance

    • Be part of concept development and selection through comparative simulation studies

    • Define and evaluate design trade-offs considering thermal, mechanical, and manufacturing constraints

    • Correlate simulation results with experimental test data

    • Work with mechanical engineers on geometry, materials, and tolerances

    • Support prototype iterations and root-cause analysis of performance gaps

    • Document models, assumptions, and simulation methodologies

    Job requirements

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field

    • Strong industry background in electromagnetics and electric machine design

    • Hands-on experience with EM FEA tools for motor simulation (JMAG, Comsol, MotorCAD, …)

    • Deep understanding of electric motor physics

    • Ability to translate simulation results into actionable design guidance

    • Creative mindset to solve unsolved problems

    • Strong communication skills and comfort working in multidisciplinary teams

    Nice to Have

    • Experience with robotic actuators or high-torque motors

    • Familiarity with thermal or structural simulation, as well as insights into electrical simulations or coupling

    • Experienced in optimization algorithms

    • Exposure to manufacturing constraints for motors

    • Experience correlating simulations with test data

    Benefits & Compensation

    • Salary Range: $106,400- $187,700 + Equity

    • Health, dental, and vision insurance

    • 401(k) with company match
