Job description
About 1X
We’re an AI and robotics company based in Palo Alto, California, on a mission to build a truly abundant society through general-purpose robots capable of performing any kind of work autonomously.
We believe that to truly understand the world and grow in intelligence, humanoid robots must live and learn alongside us. That’s why we’re focused on developing safe home robots designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.
This is a technical position that requires practical experience with the materials, processes and parts used in mechanical assemblies. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of such products with the desire and capability to take on new challenges in unfamiliar areas to help enable our mission.
Role Overview
As a Build Quality Engineer – Mechanical, you’ll make sure humanoid robots are built right and meet quality and safety standards. You’ll set up and run quality checks during builds, test parts and assemblies to catch issues early, and work with suppliers and production teams to find and fix defects. You’ll improve build processes to make them more reliable, keep clear records of issues and test results, and write simple reports to share progress. You’ll also make sure all work follows industry and safety requirements while helping the team build better, more consistent robots.
Responsibilities
Make sure products meet quality standards at every stage — from in-process checks to final inspection.
Investigate and fix problems fast when issues come up in production or from customers.
Drive improvements that reduce scrap, rework, and downtime.
Work closely with manufacturing and suppliers to keep processes stable and reliable.
Set up clear inspection methods, quality plans, and acceptance criteria for parts and assemblies.
Help design teams build quality into products early through practical feedback on drawings, tolerances, and materials.
Run FMEAs to find potential failures and prevent them before they happen.
Use data and simple tools to check if processes are capable and running within spec.
Run experiments or tests when needed to understand root causes or compare process options.
Track and close out corrective actions using structured problem-solving (like 8D or DMAIC).
Keep quality systems organized and accurate — from control plans and inspection records to supplier quality reports.
Job requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
2+ years of experience in quality engineering roles
We will consider candidates between entry-level and staff-level
Demonstrated application of process controls in high-volume manufacturing, testing, and quality environments
Hands-on knowledge of manufacturing methods such as machining, die casting, and forging
Experience supporting the production of complex electromechanical assemblies.
Quality Engineering expertise including ASQ certification preferred (Certified Quality Engineer, Certified Six Sigma Green/Black Belt/Certified Quality Auditor/Certified Manager of Quality)
Core Tools and other relevant methods and tools including 8D, FMEA, Control Plan, SPC, Capacities Study, MSA, APQP, PPAP, DOE and Hypothesis Testing
Understanding and familiarity with Quality Management standards as ISO 9001
Specific training and demonstrated success in applying design for quality, problem-solving methodologies, FMEA, process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE and SPC
Strong background and demonstrated success applying statistical methods. Minitab, JMP or other statistical software capabilities are preferred
Data mining, databases and scripting experience (e.g. MySQL, Python)
Strong background in applying statistical and structured problem-solving methods.
Commitment to adopting a Lean approach to quality while ensuring safety and reliability are never compromised.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across functions and present findings clearly.
