Job description

Target start date: Immediately. Relocation provided.

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We are looking for an experienced production Automation Engineer to join our manufacturing operations at our new Hayward facility. You will play a critical role in designing, deploying, and scaling automation systems that enable the efficient and reliable production of our humanoid robots. This includes building robotic and electromechanical automation for assembly, material handling, and end-of-line processes. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure every robot we ship is manufactured with world-class efficiency, quality, and repeatability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain production automation equipment and robotic cells for assembly, joining, fastening, dispensing, testing, and packaging processes.

  • Apply mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering principles to develop automation solutions that reduce cycle time, improve quality, and enhance safety.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing, design, and controls teams to integrate sensors, actuators, PLCs, and vision systems into automated systems.

  • Develop and refine process automation sequences and work instructions to ensure high reliability and throughput.

  • Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize automation equipment, including root cause analysis of failures.

  • Drive continuous improvement of automation hardware, tooling, and processes to scale production capacity.

  • Create and maintain detailed documentation (schematics, layouts, code, operating procedures, maintenance schedules).

  • Support new product introduction (NPI) by developing scalable automation strategies for new robot designs.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, or Automation Engineering.

  • Strong foundation in automation design (motion control, robotics, pneumatics, sensors, machine vision, PLCs).

  • Experience with designing and building electromechanical automation equipment.

  • Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA) for fixture and tooling design.

  • Familiarity with industrial automation software and hardware (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff, Fanuc, ABB, KUKA).

  • Ability to analyze and optimize production processes using data-driven methods (Python, MATLAB, SQL, or equivalent).

  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with robotic or humanoid assembly automation.

  • Background in lean manufacturing, DFMA, FMEA, or Six Sigma methodologies.

  • Exposure to high-volume or high-reliability manufacturing environments.

  • Hands-on skills in machine design, controls programming, or vision system integration.

Compensation
At 1X your work and results will be rewarded with a total rewards package consisting of a base salary, stock options and benefits. Base salary range is $90,000 to $150,000. Your actual salary will be based on your knowledge, skills and experience.

Location Policy
We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.
